TEAM
Power-to-Gas
The Power-to-Gas team deals with potential analyses to identify preferred locations and possible applications for power-to-gas plants (PtG). In this context, we carry out studies on hydrogen compatibility and the effects on the gas grid and end customers. A further focus is on safety-related considerations, such as relevant gas parameters, ignition behavior, dispersion behavior and ex-zones for hydrogen. With the help of comprehensive system modeling, the components (e.g. electrolysis, storage) are dimensioned according to requirements. For this purpose, project-related CAPEX, OPEX and operating parameters can be stored in the model and thus gas production costs and sensitivities of individual system components can be analyzed.
Current research priorities are also being addressed in the ongoing projects H2INFRA (H2 infrastructure – efficient and safe operation of hydrogen distribution networks in Bitterfeld) and in the Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park real-world laboratory (real mapping of the value chain of production, storage, transportation and consumption of green hydrogen). Among other things, this involves the practical testing of plastic pipelines and components (GDRMA) with 100% hydrogen at the distribution grid level as well as the technical design of the above-ground system (measurement concept, safety technology). In addition, connection concepts for an urban hydrogen supply are examined, approval documents prepared and test plans developed for the entire hydrogen supply chain.
We offer the following services:
- Feasibility studies based on site-specific and hourly analyses of the generation capacities of renewable energy (wind, solar etc.) and the absorption capacities of gas infrastructures or consumption data
- Dimensioning and technical design of the PtG system as well as planning, construction (support) and documentation of the feed-in system, including the necessary measurement technology
- Comparison of the various electrolysis processes with regard to framework conditions, e.g. availability, delivery times, market maturity and strategy for operation and maintenance
- Plant-specific profitability analysis of the entire PtG value chain as well as identification and evaluation of potential uses
- Investigation of hydrogen compatibility and the effects on the gas network and end customers
- Practical use and investigation of components in the high-pressure hydrogen test rig in Bitterfeld (safety, function)
- Implementation of safety-related considerations such as relevant gas parameters, ignition behavior, dispersion behavior, risk assessment and Ex zones
