Gas Grids & Gas Facilities
The department Gas Grids and Gas Facilities deals with the safe and efficient transportation and distribution of gases such as natural gas, biogas, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. We use new findings and our many years of experience in the planning and modeling of gas networks and gas plants for site selection and evaluation as well as for the engineering of innovative technologies, e.g. for power-to-gas plants or smart systems in gas supply. We also work on topics such as the transformation of gas grids for a renewable energy system and the design of a suitable legal framework. We also focus on innovative tasks and issues relating to emissions and life cycle assessments.
We are committed to making our contribution to the transformation of energy supply systems from a centralized, conventional to an increasingly decentralized and sustainable energy supply. With our experience and innovative strength, we support the positioning of the gas industry in the future energy system and develop new requirements and opportunities for the energy transition.
Fields of activity
We focus primarily on the transportation and distribution network level as well as isolated solutions for the distribution of gases (e.g. industrial gas networks). This also includes all relevant gas network systems and assemblies (e.g. gas pressure control and measuring systems, safety equipment). As the gas networks are the connecting element between gas production/extraction and the consumer, these areas are also considered. In addition, we evaluate energy generation and conversion systems (e.g. wind power and photovoltaic systems, power-to-gas systems) and can thus map the entire value chain.
- Planning, design and optimization of gas networks and gas systems as well as the associated components
- Computer-aided modelling of complex energy system models and components, comparison of operating scenarios and variants as well as optimization (e.g. technical, economic, ecological) of various parameters and carrying out sensitivity analyses
- Design and approval planning for new and existing plants as well as planning for authorities
- Review, revision and digitalization of existing documents for complete, uniform and legally compliant verification of gas network systems and pipelines
- Detection and quantification of gas emissions on site and development of solutions for the future reduction and avoidance of gas emissions
- Carrying out carbon footprint calculations / life cycle assessments
- Preparation of potential analyses to identify preferred locations and possible applications for power-to-gas (PtG) plants
- Investigation of H2 compatibility and effects on the gas network and end customers
- Implementation of safety-related considerations such as relevant gas parameters, ignition behavior, dispersion behavior and Ex zones
- Transformation, testing and evaluation for the conversion to hydrogen and carbon dioxide
