Company history
Over 65 years of experience.
The starting point was the work of Wilhelm August Lampadius, who worked as a professor of chemistry and metallurgy at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy in Freiberg from 1794 to 1842. The Deutsches Brennstoffinstitut (DBI) in Freiberg emerged from the Bergakademie in 1956 and was intended as a centralised institution to bundle research and development in the field of fossil fuels.
From 1966, the gas sector was represented by its own, rapidly growing department. With the political change in the 1990s, a privatisation process began in the new federal states. During this phase, DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH emerged from the gas technology departments of the DBI in 1991, and has since asserted itself in the German and European research landscape.
As a research organisation of the DVGW – Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches e.V. (DVGW), DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH found a permanent place. The increase in publicly funded, basic research projects in the 1990s and the changed situation in testing finally led to the founding of DBI – Gastechnologisches Institut gGmbH Freiberg in 1998 as a wholly owned subsidiary of DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH.
